Instructions
Cut the raw bacon into ½ - ¾ inch pieces.
In a stockpot, saute the bacon until it is crispy. Don't drain the fat.
Add the green beans to the stockpot with the crispy bacon and fat.
Add enough water to cover the beans completely.
Stir in the sugar.
Add a light amount of salt and pepper.
Spread a diced onion on the surface of the beans - Don't stir in the onion.
Cover the pot and let it come to a simmer.
Allow the beans to simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
Stir the beans and taste. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Culinarian Tips, Tricks, and Suggestions:We have found that canned-cut green beans can work well with this recipe. This is an excellent option if you don't have fresh green beans. You can substitute an entire #10 can of green beans for the green beans and water in the above list - don't drain the can, just add everything.
